Canal Latéral à la Loire
- Still putting off the final day to winter moorings by fiddling about in
Beaulon.
- All shops in Beaulon relatively small, and sort of places that are very
cash orientated, so a pocket full of cash is essential if staying over
several days. So checked on rumour I had heard that the cash machine
in Beaulon only serves French cards. Unfortunately couldn't try
it - already had plenty of cash and it costs minimum of £2.00 a time to
draw cash on a debit card abroad. (Has this
anything to do with this ridiculous "credit crunch"?
It costs £1.00 to make an "overseas purchase" on a standard
Lloyds debit card). Anyway, the Beaulon one looks utterly
standard with all the various card logos stuck up all round it, so feel
there is a good chance it is, in fact, a standard machine - but will try it
in the spring - unless someone knows?!

Tuesday
Beaulon to Decize.
Canal Latéral à la Loire
- "Found" stork nest - now sited so
that is only visible - especially if the trees are in foliage - from
upstream,
Great
fun getting into Decize - even though it signals end of trip
2008. Comfortable mooring sitting waiting for me.
- Look for the Heron!!
- This was the final day's cruising in 2008 -
pity the weather has changed to very ordinary over the last few days,
following that spell of clear sunny days - but unbelievably cold.
- Sad.

First thing noticed on the mooring - there are lots of Kingfishers
around this end, and the residential peniche moored against the
reeds. Remember the odd one in the spring - wonder if these are
their young family?
Started in over these 4 days to organise Albert for the winter, and to
organise railway journey home. Seemed to make very heavy weather of
it all - motivation? or just idle incompetance?

- Pictures:-
- Top right - new steel
sheet revetments. Will see what the finished job is like in the
spring - this certainly is not it. Normally they drive them to
final height maybe 24" to 36" above water surface in a beautiful
neat straight level line. These people know very well what
they are on, so there is undoubtedly a hidden agenda.
- Top left - originally
took this as a "nice scene" - noticed the heron after.
- Lower right -
now you know where you are.
